Around Christmas 2024, we lost our beloved family dog, Axel. He was a scruffy rescue that we believe was a Bascottie (Basset Hound + Scottish Terrier). Axel was a great dog for our homestead and our family, and we still feel his loss. About a week after he died, we began to look into getting another dog.
Unbeknownst to us, a friend had shared Axel's picture and story with a local dog expert who wanted to know if our hearts could handle another dog because she thought she had the perfect one for us. And she was right. We met the sweetest, gentlest pup and knew we would be bringing her home—we could figure out whelping and finding homes for a litter of puppies. This dog was worth the effort!
Since we knew little of our pup's backstory but wanted to give her a fresh start, we named her Cosette, but we usually call her Coco. When we got Coco, she was in need of a loving, stable home and already pregnant. We thought she was around 3-6 weeks pregnant, but she gave birth her third night in our home. We are excited to get to know her better, and are enjoying all her little babies.

Our family of five homestead in Northern Minnesota. We garden, raise poultry and pigs, and love outdoor adventures. Our kids are ages 0-7 and love roaming our twenty-some acres of field and forest. It's pretty swampy here, so we love dogs with dual coats. Labs and Griffons are both great water dogs, and our dog Coco is a 50/50 mix of both.
Between our kids, our cat, and raising these pups in our household, we are hoping to have well-socialized puppies available to active families. All our puppies have been DNA tested for breed and health issues, and we found out that there are two sires with two resulting groups of pups within the litter with different percentages of Labrador and WPG.
While we didn't set out to breed dogs, we are doing our best to be responsible breeders and and give these pups the best possible start in life. If you are interested in purchasing a puppy from this litter, please email Alex at contact@hartsfieldhomesteadpress.com.
Coco is a Griffondor, which is a mix between a Wirehaired Griffon Pointer and a Labrador Retriever. Coco is an F1 Griffondor and her puppies are F1B Griffondors (3) and F2 Griffondors (5)*.
Labs generally live 10-13 years and are a large breed at 21-25 inches high and 55-80 pounds. They are also an excellent hunting dog and are loyal and easy to train. Labs have a lot of energy and need plenty of excercise so they are great for active families. They have a double coat and are great water dogs, with a natural soft bite. This is a highly intelligent working dog breed that can be trained to do different jobs. They are great with children and make excellent family dogs, getting along with other dogs as well. Labs shed and need to be brushed regularly.
These are great hunting and companion dogs! Smaller than Labs, Griffons are usually 20-24 inches high and weigh 35-70 pounds. In good health, they live 12-15 years and are a great temperment. They are loyal, friendly, energetic, and social and love to train. Griffons are great for active families who can invest in their training and meet their exercise needs. Griffons are generally bred specifically to hunt, and so preference will be made to families who hunt. These dogs get along well with all human members of the family. They have a strong prey drive and might not get along with cats, and can be territorial of their owners and don't get along with other dogs. While WPG are great all-around hunting dogs, their double coat makes them exceptional in swampy enviroments.
This is not a breed recognized by the AKC. A medium to large sporting breed. Generally 22-25 inches and 45-80 pounds. They often live 12-15 years and are easygoing, affectionate, and want to please. Their characteristics makes them highly trainable and suited for country living, hunting, and adventure dogs. They are high energy and sociable, and need to be with an active family that can invest in their education.
*Because of how genetics are varied in mixed breeds, we cannot assure potential customers of specific qualities our puppies will have. We suggest potential owners research both parent breeds and decide if either of these breeds would be a good fit in their home and lifestyle. Coco has been DNA tested and the puppies have been DNA tested for genetic make-up and health conditions. The results will be provided to owners in the paperwork that includes vaccination records and the initial veterinarian check-up.
Winten is the sire of three of Coco's pups and is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Two of Coco's pups have the same spotted coat and coloration as their dad—Strider and Scarlett. Nori looks like Coco!
