These are working dogs that require lots of exercise and mental stimulation. As puppies, one or two short 5-10 minute training session is generally enough. As they get older, though, these dogs will need 60-90 minutes of activity, exercise, and stimulation a day.
Each puppy will come with a crate that is the big enough for their adult size. The crate comes with a divider that we have installed to give puppies half their crate to limit accidents. Puppies nap and sleep in their crates and get frequent bathroom breaks outside as well as short grooming and training sessions. After a few weeks of introducing crates, the puppies are able to settle in when crated.
We encourage families to continue to allow their dogs access to their crates so that puppies have a place that feels safe and their own. Puppies should only be crated for as many hours as they are months old (i.e. an eight week old puppy should be crated for two hours or less).
The puppies have opportunities to play inside as well as outside, and we are still working on limiting accidents when they are not in their crate. After a nap, we've been taking them directly outside for at least ten minutes and bringing them in for a play and training session once they have gone to the bathroom.
Because they have a bed in their crate (that will come home with them) they have not been having accidents on soft surfaces. They know not to use the bathroom on bedding.
Puppies are beginning to get used to wearing a collar and the weight of a leash. They are also being socialized with each other and Mama Coco, our cat, our kids (ages 0-7), and us! As puppies finish their vaccinations, they will be increasingly introduced to other people and animals in a variety of settings.
We encourage you to take your vaccinated puppies to as many different environments as you can while they are still young! Right now, everything is new and almost everything they are exposed to can become 'normal' to them. Helping them have positive experiences now can help them become more confident as adult dogs.
We are actively desensitizing the puppies to normal house hold noises, such as the dishwasher, vacuum, and kids playing. The puppies have gone on car rides, been to the vet, and are regularly checked over to prepare them for the groomer. Their nails are clipped weekly, and at that time we inspect their paws, ears, and give them a once over so that they are used to being handled. Please continue handling your puppy so that they continue to tolerate this. Your groomer and veterinarian will thank you!
The puppies are just beginning clicker training. We are starting to click and give a treat when they hear the clicker. We've been doing more clicker training with Coco, and it is how we got her to learn her call name so fast (just three days).
We're hoping the clickers allow the puppies to have consistency in their training, no matter who is in charge of the session or where the training takes place. A clicker will be sent home with each puppy at pick-up!
